Celebrated scheme-gas connection::
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a grand scheme in Ballia to provide free local cooking gas connections to families living below the poverty line. Launching the free gas connection scheme, Modi described himself as the number one laborer and spoke on a number of issues. Describing himself as the number one worker, Modi mentioned a series of schemes undertaken by his government for the welfare of the workers. The scheme has been launched on the occasion of May Day. Modi lashed out at previous governments for doing too little for the poor. He said that the policies formulated by the previous governments were not designed with the welfare of the poor in mind. The plan was prepared with only the ballot boxes in mind. Modi said in clear words that poverty will be eradicated only if the poor get power, resources and opportunities, education, employment, housing, drinking water, electricity.

Focus on the BPL family::
Questions were raised against the policies pursued by the previous government to eradicate poverty. Poverty has been on the rise for many years. We are fighting poverty. Announcing this, he said that under Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana, free LPG connection will be made available in the name of women members in BPL families. 1.5 crore such connections will be issued in the first year. The target of Rs 5 crore will be completed in three years. He said that after 70 years of independence, his government would provide 50 million such connections within three years as compared to only 150 million LPG connections. Modi said that when the BJP government came to power in 2014, he had said in his first speech in the Central Hall of Parliament that his government was committed to the poor. Whatever action the government takes will be in the interest of the poor and the welfare of the poor. Modi had mentioned schemes including a minimum pension of Rs 1,000. In addition, due to the provident fund portability, the benefits of staying in a job shift will now be available. After launching the Give It Up campaign on March 8, a large number of people have come forward. 1.10 crore people have voluntarily given up subsidies. Modi assured that by surrendering the subsidy, free LPG connection would be made available to BPL families.

Consumers are currently entitled to 15 cylinders or 5 cylinders weighing 5 kg. The market price of LPG is higher but the subsidy price is lower. Modi said that huge benefits are being given to BPL families in the first year itself. Rs 1,500 will be provided to BPL families for each LPG connection. There are 134 million active LPG consumers in the country. In his address, Modi said that in the next 1000 days, electricity will reach 15,000 villages which do not even have electricity pylons.

Required documentation
For this, Aadhaar card is required in the name of all the members of the concerned BPL family. Customers will be able to apply till April 30. Three photo BDs along with BPL ration card, bank passbook have to be applied. A copy of all the Aadhaar cards of the family will also have to be enclosed.

It may be mentioned here that under this scheme, gas agencies will provide gas connection as well as regulators, rubber tubes, fireplaces etc. free of cost. Inden will provide free gas connection on an earlier basis. HPCL will provide customers with a cylinder, a regulator, a security deposit, a card and a safety hose free of charge.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala scheme to provide free LPG connections to women from BPL families. Under the scheme, a provision of Rs 8,000 crore has been made to provide 5 crore LPG connections to BPL families. Each BPL family will be given financial assistance of Rs. 1600 for LPG connection. Appropriate BPL families will be identified through consultation with the State and Union Territories. The scheme will be implemented in the financial years 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-2019.

The poor in the country still have limited access to cooking gas (LPG). The reach of LPG cylinders is mainly to urban and semi-urban areas and most of them are middle and affluent class. Making coal-based cooking has been linked to serious health problems. According to an estimate by the World Health Organization, 5 lakh people in India have died due to dirty coal fuel. The most common causes of death include non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, trauma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and even lung cancer. Domestic air pollution is responsible for a large number of respiratory diseases in children. According to experts, lighting an open fire in the kitchen is equivalent to burning 400 cigarettes per hour.
Providing free LPG connection to BPL families will make cooking gas accessible to all in the country. This will empower women and protect their health.
