ટોકિયો ઓલમ્પિકમાં ઈટાલીના ગિયાનમાર્કો તમ્બેરી અને કતારના મુત્તાઝ એસ્સા બાર્શીમ વચ્ચે ઊંચી કુદનો ફાઇનલ મુકાબલો હતો. ગોલ્ડમેડલ મેળવવા માટે બંનેએ પોતાની પૂરી તાકાત લગાવીને ઊંચો કૂદકો લગાવ્યો. બંને વચ્ચે ટાઈ પડી કારણકે બંનેએ 2.37 મીટરનો કૂદકો લગાવ્યો હતો.
ટાઈ દૂર કરવા માટે નિયમ પ્રમાણે બંનેને ત્રણ-ત્રણ પ્રયાસ કરવાના હતા પરંતુ કમભાગ્યે બંનેમાંથી કોઈ ત્રણ પ્રયાસો પછી પણ 2.37 મીટર કરતા વધુ ઊંચો કૂદકો લગાવી શક્યા નહિ. ટાઈનો રેકર્ડ બ્રેક ન થતા બંનેને વધુ એક પ્રયાસ કરવાની તક મળી. હવે જે વધુ ઊંચો કૂદકો મારી શકે તે ગોલ્ડમેડલ વિજેતા થાય.
ટાઈ દૂર કરવા માટેના 3 પ્રયાસો કરતી વખતે તંબોરીને પગમાં ગંભીર ઇજા થઇ હતી આથી તેનાથી કૂદકો લાગી શકે તેમ ન હતો. એણે પ્રયાસ પડતો મુકવાનો નિર્ણય કર્યો અને પોતાની જાતને ફાઇનલમાંથી બહાર કરી દીધી. હવે ગોલ્ડમેડલ બાર્શીમનો જ હતો કારણકે તેનો પ્રતિસ્પર્ધી સ્પર્ધામાંથી ખસી ગયો હતો. કોઈપણ માણસ જે ઘડીની આતુરતાથી રાહ જોતો હોય એવી વિજયની ઘડીએ બાર્શીમેં નિર્ણાયકોને પૂછ્યું કે 'હું પણ ફાઇનલમાંથી હટી જાવ તો ગોલ્ડમેડલ અમારા બંને વચ્ચે વહેંચી શકાય ?'
નિર્ણાયકો સહિત બધાને આશ્વર્ય થયું કે સામેથી આવેલો ગોલ્ડમેડલ આ કેમ જતો કરે છે ? બાર્શીમે કહ્યુ,"મારો પ્રતિ સ્પર્ધી રમી શકે એવી સ્થિતિમાં જ ન હોય તો એવો ગોલ્ડમેડલ જીતીને મારે શુ કરવો છે ?" નિર્ણાયકોએ નિયમો ચકાસીને બાર્શીમને કહ્યુ, 'જો તમે પણ ફાઇનલમાંથી ખસી જાવ તો ગોલ્ડમેડલ તમારા બંને વચ્ચે વહેંચી શકાય.' બસ તે જ ક્ષણે બાર્શીમેં જાહેર કર્યું કે હું પણ ફાઇનલમાંથી મારી જાતને પાછી ખેંચુ છું.
બાર્શીમની ખેલદિલી અને દરિયાદીલીથી ફાઇનલ હારી ચુકેલો તમ્બેરી ગોલ્ડમેડલ વિજેતા થયો અને ટોકિયો ઓલમ્પિકની ઊંચી કુદનો ગોલ્ડમેડલ એક નહીં બે વ્યક્તિઓ વચ્ચે સમાન ભાગે વહેંચાયો.
જીતવાનો જેટલો આંનદ હોય એનાથી પણ વિશેષ આંનદ જિતમાં કોઈને ભાગીદાર બનાવવાનો હોય. લોકો વિજેતાનો જય જય કાર કરે પણ વિજયમાં ભાગ આપનારને પ્રેમપૂર્વક આદર આપે.👍🏻🤝🏻👍🏻

A disappointing day for India overall. Barring few good performances in Table Tennis, badminton and boxing, where Manika Batra, PV Sindhu and Mary Kom registered wins, Indians were outclassed everywhere.
In Shooting, another bad day as Manu Bhaker ran out of luck in 10m air pistol and others were just below average in their qualifications.
Other big jolts were Sathiyan Gnanasekaran failing to win his first round clash in TT and Indian hockey team getting a 7-1 drubbing in hands of Australians.
Good news in badminton as PV Sindhu too eased into the second round.
In Tennis, Sania/Raina pair was beaten in the opening round.
Gymnast Pranati Nayak failed to make the cut in qualifications.
Rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh however qualified for the semi-finals of the men’s lightweight double sculls repechage at the Tokyo Olympics.
